Jean Aubineau

Rumor has it there is a charming old man who lives in a small village in the Charente and who is in possession of some hidden Cognac treasures. We set off on a quest to find this elusive man and was lucky enough to share a day of exceptional Cognac and stories with him.

Located in the village of Malaville within the Charente region there is a winding country lane, down which you will find a small estate. Somewhere amongst this estate resides Jean Aubineau, but to find him you must first locate the old-school Peugeot that acts as a clue to lead you to the charming house where Jean lives. If you are lucky enough to find him, then you will have the pleasure of the company of a talented and wise man who is almost in his 90s and who began distilling Cognac from the tender age of 27.

We visited Jean on a fresh, spring morning at the beginning of April to discuss Jean’s life, his future and most importantly, his Cognac.

Jean Aubineau lives at the residence in Malaville with his dog, with whom he is inseparable. Jean’s Grandson also lives in another house on the estate and has recently begun taking over the Cognac production. Rather fittingly he is 27 years old, the same age Jean was for his first distillation. Jean is immensely proud of his Grandson, although he doesn’t like how fast he drives the tractor.

When Jean first began distilling, his family-owned 12 hectares of vineyards across the Grande Champagne and Fins Bois terroirs, since then Jean’s land has grown to over three times this amount, but his organic production methods always remained the same. He even still uses the old barrels that his father had made by a Cognac cooper on the family’s estate during the time of the Second World War, however today they are used to store his Pineau.

In fact, although Jean no longer produces his own Cognacs, he is still in possession of a limited number of exceptional bottles from his time at the helm, which we are proud to present to you on Cognac Expert.

Both Cognacs that Jean shared with us are single barrel and solely produced using the Ugni Blanc grape variety. As mentioned earlier Jean Aubineau, and his father before him, produced Cognacs in the traditional manner; ensuring no additives, caramels or sugars were ever added. This is even more noteworthy as often Cognacs from around this time have an overpowering oak flavor (boisée), or are too sweet from the use of additives.

The results of the approach taken by Jean are two extraordinary Cognacs that are a shining example of how old-fashioned methods can be applied with great success. Among these bottles is a 63-year-old Grande Champagne Cognac, of which only around 200 bottles remain and a 52-year-old Fins Bois Cognac, of which there are around the same.

Both of the Cognacs were stored for six months in new barrels, before being transferred to the casks that his father used to use and both are of a high proof of 48%. The Grande Champagne Cognac is rather robust on the nose, with a complex palate of dark fruits and rancio that is typical of the region. The Fins Bois has an intense and rounded aroma. To taste it is lighter but gives the impression of being older than the Grande Champagne due to eaux-de-vie of the Fins Bois region being quicker to age.

When discussing these remaining bottles with Jean, he expressed his regret at not hanging onto more of them! He has watched the Cognac market continue to soar, and so now continues to increase his prices as his stock depletes. He also has some words of wisdom for the young Cognac producers of today and recommends they keep some to one side for their later years.

During our visit to Jean Aubineau, Jean shared his concern for the future of Cognac production due to climate change and predicted that 2021 would bring a particularly hot summer. His prediction comes from the trees on his land, where the birds have chosen to make their nests particularly high up this year, indicating the coming heat which will be very problematic for the young plants and the water they require.

With regards to his own future, even at the age of 87, Jean has plans to rebuild his house in Malaville. He intends to replace the old roof and lay grass on the inside yard area. As for his secrets to old age, eat well and lots of veggies.
