Cognac in a decanter
Some Cognac is released in a decanter rather than a standard bottle. It is how many houses present their XO and older blends, and how the great crystal editions have always been sold.
Two different things share the word. The first is a Cognac sold in a decanter, a shaped glass or crystal vessel with a stopper that replaces the standard bottle. That is what you find on this page. The second is an empty serving decanter you fill yourself at home, which is a piece of glassware rather than a spirit. Our guide to Cognac glassware covers that side.
Houses reserve the format for their older blends, so a decanter release is usually XO, Extra or Hors d'Age. A few Vintage bottlings use it too.

The question everyone asks
No. Cognac matures in oak, and that development stops as soon as it is filled into glass. A sealed decanter holds the spirit exactly as the cellar master released it, whether that is for one year or twenty. This is the opposite of wine, where decanting separates sediment and opens up a young structure. Cognac has no sediment and needs no aeration, so pouring it into a decanter is a question of how it looks on the table and how easily it pours. If you use your own crystal decanter at home, treat it as a serving vessel for the evening rather than long term storage, and keep the stopper tight. Age statements work the same way, which is why a Cognac age statement refers to time in wood, never time in the bottle.
The crystal houses
When a producer wants to mark a very old blend, it goes to a crystal house. Baccarat has worked with Cognac since the nineteenth century and makes the vessel for Rémy Martin Louis XIII, for the Hennessy Bras d'Or and for the Chabasse Baccarat we carry. Lalique and Daum bring moulded and pâte de verre decoration, as on the Hardy Perfection Lumière in Daum crystal. Sèvres porcelain appears too, on pieces such as the Château de Montifaud Sèvre Decanter.
These editions are numbered, made in runs of a few hundred at most, and the packaging is part of the object. They sit alongside our Prestige, XXO and Hors d'Age selections, where the liquid inside is often forty years old or more.

Why it sells as a gift
A decanter arrives ready to give. The vessel is heavier and better finished than a standard bottle, the stopper is usually ground glass, and most editions ship in a fitted wooden or lacquered case.
Read the label rather than the shape before you buy. A carafe presentation says nothing about age on its own, so check whether the bottling is an XO, an Extra or a Hors d'Age, and which cru it comes from. Serving and storing
Store it upright, away from direct light and away from heat, exactly as you would any Cognac. Upright keeps the spirit off the stopper, which matters more with a ground glass or cork stopper than most people expect. Serve neat at room temperature in a tulip glass, and give it a minute in the glass before the first sip. A sealed decanter keeps its quality for years. Once opened, a bottle that is more than half empty will slowly flatten over a long period, so pour it rather than saving it forever.
Good to know
Yes. Cognac ages in oak and stops developing once it is in glass, so a decanter neither improves it nor harms it. Unlike wine there is no sediment to separate and no need to let it breathe. Use a decanter for how it looks and how it pours, and keep the stopper tight.
In practice nothing. Carafe is the French word the houses print on the label, decanter is the English one. Both describe a shaped glass or crystal vessel with a stopper, sold filled and sealed by the producer.
Mostly XO and older. Producers use the format to mark their better blends, so you will find XO, Extra, Vieille Réserve and Hors d'Age releases in a carafe, and the great crystal editions at the top of the range.
A sealed decanter from the producer keeps for years, stored upright and away from light and heat. If you have filled your own crystal decanter at home, treat it as a serving vessel for the evening rather than long term storage.
You are paying for the vessel, the case and usually an older blend. If you want the liquid alone, the same house often bottles a comparable Cognac in a standard bottle for less. As a gift, or as a collector piece, the decanter is the point.
