Thierry Bonnin

Thierry Bonnin

Although a relatively new brand of cognac, the history of the vineyards and buildings that make up Thierry Bonnin Cognac can be traced back through the centuries. With a land area that’s been gradually increasing in size over the years, Thierry Bonnin not only create their own wines, cognacs and pineau, but also supply eaux-de-vie to some of the biggest names in cognac – such as Hennessy and Courvoisier. The property is known as Le Maine Michaud, and is ably run by Thierry and Jacqueline Bonnin, with the help of Guyot Poussart. Both Thierry and his wife come from farming families. They use the centuries of traditions and experience that has been passed down through the generations to create a cognac brand and legacy that they can be proud to leave for their children to inherit.

History of Thierry Bonnin Cognac

The land where Le Maine Michaud is located was originally owned by the Mayor of Angoulême back in the early 1600s. This was passed on through various members of the family, and at the end of the seventeenth century the house that still stands today was built. The property remained in the same family until 1807, and after that it changed hands many times.

It wasn’t until 1948 that Le Maine Michaud was purchased by the Bonnin family, and in 1954, Yves Bonnin (Thierry Bonnin’s grandfather) took over the house and adjoining land. His intention was to cultivate the grasslands that surrounded the property as he was, by trade, a dealer in livestock. The land had fallen into disrepair over the years, and he worked hard to cultivate the moors and wasteland back to full health. Whilst undertaking this, he also decided to re-cultivate the small vineyard attached to the estate.

1961 saw Yves’s son, Gerard, move to the house with his new wife. With the enthusiasm of newlyweds, Gerard and Micheline were responsible for developing most of the vineyards that are still present to this day. As adjoining neighbours retired they bought up additional terrain, and therefore increased the amount of available land on which to plant vines and to farm. Along with this they also built the necessary facilities in which to store, age and distill the wine.

In 1983 the estate passed to Thierry Bonnin, the current owner, and in 1986 he took up winemaking as a full time career.

Cognac Thierry Bonnin Today

Today the vineyards of Le Maine Michaud cover 15 hectares. True to their farming roots, Thierry and Jacqueline also own and farm a further 70 hectares that are planted with various types of cereals and grain. It is this farming knowledge that gives them the ability to tend the soil in such a manner that their vines produce fruits suitable for high quality eaux-de-vie.

Their 15 hectares of vines are planted solely with Ugni Blanc grapes and are in the terroir of Fins Bois AOC appellation. It is tantamount to the quality of their labours that the demand for their product from Hennessy and Courvoisier is growing year on year.

Of course, they don’t just sell the raw product on to other houses. They also produce two different cognacs, Pineau des Charente and wines in-house that are sold under the label Cognac Thierry Bonnin.
