The History
The Jean Fillioux cognac house was founded by Honoré Fillioux in 1880. Honoré learned his trade distilling cognacs for a major cognac house before setting up on his own in the heart of the Grande Champagne. The "La Pouyade" estate, acquired in 1894, is perfectly situated in the "golden triangle" - bounded by the villages of Verrières, Angeac-Champagne and Juillac-le-Coq, where the age-old Cretaceous limestone and clay soil is renowned for the quality of the grapes it produces.
The Fillioux family has been passing on knowledge, know-how and tradition for over 130 years. The men of the Fillioux dynasty are blessed with a superb "nose", ideal for creating perfect blends, driven, no doubt, by their love of the grapes, the soil and the region in which they live and work. Jean Fillioux cognacs reflect the work of successive generations, and bear witness to the know-how handed down through the ages.
Jean Fillioux Today
The current manager, Christophe Fillioux, is Honoré's great-great-grandson. He was able to supervise first harvest in 2003. Christophe is a firm believer in traditional methods, and the cognac is the same methods used by his forebears before him. Most Jean Fillioux cognacs are aged in new oak barrels a little longer than normal, so that the eaux-de-vie soak up the aromas of the wood, before being aged for a longer period in old oak barrels to develop roundness and delicacy.
Christophe is recognized in the profession as a master of his art. From soil maintenance to aging, from bottling to labeling, not a single step is without Christophe Fillioux's advice.
News, Awards & Anecdotes
Jean Fillioux cognacs are recognized internationally for their high quality. The art of blending is a speciality of the house, and Christophe likes to use the full aromatic palette that French oak barrels can provide.
In fact, the house works with 10 different cooperages whose methods vary, bringing new flavors to the ageing of the eaux-de-vie ageing period.
Jean Fillioux cognacs have won numerous awards in professional competitions such as the Cognac Masters", "World Spirits Competition", "San Francisco Spirit Competition", International Wine & Spirit Competition" and "Best French Spirits in Asia".
Over the years, Jean Fillioux cognacs have received rave reviews from some of the industry's biggest names, including Patrice Franck, President of the Sommellerie du Sud-Ouest de laeditor-in-chief of the "Revue du Sommelier", the "Revue du Vin de France", Olivier Bompas in the "Gault Bompas in the "Gault Millau Review", and Nelson Chaw, President of the Sommeliers of Hong Kong and China.
