Giboin Cognac

Giboin Cognac

Giboin is an expert producer of both Cognac and Pineau de Charentes, with 60 acres (24 hectars) of vineyards in both the Borderies and Fins Bois Cognac growing areas of the Charente. This family run, traditional brand has a history stretching back to the early part of the nineteenth century, and exclusively produces a very limited amount of Cognac per year. Using predominantly Ugni Blanc grapes, but Merlot too, Giboin strives to remain committed to the methods used by the family’s founders, and for a small house curates a surprisingly versatile and wide range of Cognac and Pineau products.

History of Cognac Giboin

The story of Maison Giboin started in the year 1830, when the current owner’s great great great grandfather began Cognac production on a small and humble scale. This artisan approach continued through the decades, with the knowledge and family secrets being closely guarded and passed down from generation to generation.

As the years passed by, Giboin diversified and extended its range of eaux-de-vie based products, with the brand’s first production of white Pineau de Charentes, which was then later extended to producing both a rose and red versions of Pineau too.

Passed down from family member to family member, each flourished and injected their own unique flair to the Cognac process, which consequently influenced the range of products available today. Nevertheless, throughout the generations, each remained honest to their roots and the original concepts of their forefathers. In doing so, the brand’s values are held strong and continue to remain the same, as the family strives to produce a small and exclusive number of high quality products, that can be enjoyed by all.

Giboin Cognac Today

Today Giboin rests in the capable hands of Francois Giboin. As Cellar Master and Head of the brand, Francois is supported by his two sons, who are now the 6th and 7th generations to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors.

Situated in its original setting of L’Hermitage in Cherves Richemont, Giboin is based in the prestigious Borderies growing area, with 12 hectares of Ugni-Blanc vines and 2 hectares of Merlot vines. In addition to the L’Hermitage growing area, Giboin also spans over 8 hectares of Fins Bois cru, renowned for its clay and limestone soils.

Overseeing every step of the Cognac and Pineau processes, from the growth of the vines, through to distilling, aging, blending and bottling, Francois and his team expertly craft the products that we know today from start to finish.

Sustainability is at the forefront of Maison Giboin’s values as the brand is now a member of the ‘Vigneron Independant de France’, which hones in on respecting the soils and local ecology.

With sales in Germany making up 50% of Giboin’s Cognac clientele, the brand is also seeing considerable growth in the Netherlands, U.S.A and South East Asia. In support of breaking the U.S market, Olivier Giboin, brother of Francois, is busy introducing the house’s wares to the Californian market. After visiting the Napa wine growing region to learn more about his trade, he ended up staying there, now acting as the US marketing arm of this family run Cognac house.

News, Products and Prices

The Cognacs produced by the house of Giboin are marketed in three distinct categories. These include the Cognac Giboin Borderies Millesime range and their Pineau des Charentes.
