Frapin Cognac

Frapin Cognac

The Frapin family has been around the Southwest of France since 1270. Always active in the domain of winegrowing, they specialized in distillation much later on and have since continued to stand strong throughout twenty generations! The estate owns 300 hectares of land entirely in the Grande Champagne area, of which 200 are planted with vines. Frapin’s home in the beautiful caste Fontpinot in the town of Segonzac. The most famous family member was the 16th century author Francois Rabelais, after whom a prestigious Frapin cognac bottle is named: The Cuvee Rabelais. Like some other cognac houses, Frapin needs to extend business through diversifying into other luxury products such as chocolate or coffee. Frapin was the first cognac producer to invent a multi-vintage blend, combining vintages of different years to create the perfect taste.

History of Frapin

Since 1270, the Frapin family has been living in the South-West of France. They have been active winegrowers, and later on distillers, for over 20 generations. The Frapin estate is set in the Grande Champagne at the Château de Fontpinot in Segonzac. It is the only cognac house that enjoys the classification “Chateau” combined with prime quality 100% Grande Champagne grapes.

The family tradition of the Frapins is striking with such ancestors as the 16th century Renaissance humanist writer Francois Rabelais. The house of Frapin pays tribute to this famous ancestor with the prestigeous Cuvée Rabelais.

Frapin Today

Today, the estate is owned by Genevieve Frapin and her husband Max Cointreau, while the magagement is run by their daughter Béatrice. It becomes very apparent how small the cognac business is in the end, when you realize that the same couple is also involved with Rémy Martin (ultimately a competitor of Frapin) through their connection to the Cointreau family. Frapin uses advanced techniques and natural treatments, which makes them an innovative company with a vision for sustainable development.

Olivier Paultes has been the acclaimed cellar master of Frapin since 1989. It was he who introduced the innovation of the mulit-vintage cognac, a blend of three different vintages that he unites to create a unique taste in cognac.

News, Products, Anecdotes and Old Labels

Recently, Frapin made a genius move, which surprised the international cognac world, winning them the title of the world’s finest spirit at the Wines & Spirits Challenge. They launched the first multi-vintage blend, a combination of different years that combined create characteristic aromas that one single year could never create. It’s called Frapin Multimillésime.

In 2010, Frapin's Multimilléssime was awarded the "Best Cognac of the Year" Award at the International Spirit Challenge.

Hello, I will try to answer some questions here. First, I was born in Cognac and I still live there (except I am in USA for 1 year now). I tasted a lot of Cognac brands in my short life but I want to mention that Frapin is the best I never tasted in my life. This is the only one Cognac exclusively made from "Grande champagne" which is the best of the 6 crus existing. It is very difficult to get it even in France especially for the "Millesime du Chateau Fontpinot" but you can try to ask your local Liquor store (it will be very expensive 200-300$ but it is worth!). About the VIP XO, it is usually the one I drink and if you like Cognac, don't keep it (too sad) but just drink it with some guests at the end of a good diner and you will really enjoy! If you don't usually drink liquor (it is a little strong 40% alc) you can keep it but you will have to keep it for a very long time to increase the price. Be careful, it is not wine so not on the side of the bottle. Finally, about the Grande Champagne VS Luxe, I never try it but it should be good. The bottle should be almost 50-60 euros (80$) but it is not the value the most important... You have a bottle of the finest brand of Cognac, isn't it great? Nice blog, Bye!!
