History of Cognac Pierre Ferrand

Whilst Cognac Pierre Ferrand is a relatively new concept, only being inaugurated in 1989, the methods used are strictly traditional and date back over the centuries. Back then, current owner and director, Alexandre Gabriel, had an influential experience with one of the oldest wine making families in Cognac, and from this encounter Pierre Ferrand cognac was born. Gabriel, the grandson of a Burgundy wine grower, was very particular about what he wanted to achieve with Cognac Ferrand. As such their concept has always been the antithesis of mass production techniques and to produce cognac in the way of the artisans of old.

Cognac Pierre Ferrand Today

The company Cognac Ferrand unites four different cognac brands under its roof: Pierre Ferrand, Landy, Claude Chatelier and G&A. Ferrand co-owns a 100 hectare estate in Logis d'Angeac, also in the heart of the Grande Champagne region. The distillery here dates back to 1776.

Today, Cognac Ferrand is held in high regard in the industry. While keeping strictly to the traditional techniques for producing their cognac, the house has also embraced and taken full advantage of new technology. In 2004 they unveiled their state-of-the-art blending hall and now boast a production facility that is one of the most efficient in the Cognac region.

Staying true to their philosophy, the house produces only old and very old cognacs that are sold to over 40 different countries. Because of the exclusivity of the cognacs produced, and the fact that they are only bottled to order, their products tend to be sold solely in high-end outlets worldwide. In addition to their Ars chateau, they also have an office in Paris and subsidiaries in Germany and the USA.

Christian Guerin is Ferrand’s cellar master and responsible for the diverse products that the cognac house produces.

News, Products and Old Labels

In July 2011, Pierre Ferrand Cognac launched a new product, its “1840 Original Formula”. Together with cellar master Christian Guerin and cocktail historian David Wondrich, Alexandre Gabriel brought back the legendary three star cognac that was created specifically for mix-drinks in the 19th century. For the first time, Cognac Ferrand offers a cognac that is not an old reserve or vintage, but targeted at the growing interest in cognac longdrinks and contemporary cognac mixology.

The high-end product ‘Collection Privée’ is Cognac Pierre Ferrand’s pride. These exceptional vintages are unblended, guaranteeing the pure taste of a single year cognac of premier cru cognac. The bottles are sold in individual numbered bottles and comes in a crafted wooden box with a certificate of authenticity. These unique vintages date back to 1914 and are, as to be expected, of very limited quantity.

Pierre Ferrand also produces a range of other spirits, including calvados, armaganac, gin, vodka, rum and a liqueur called Mathilde. In summer, for example, they use the same pot stills used to age the cognac in to produce vintage dated aged Citadelle Gin.
