100 year-old Grande Champagne Cognac

Domaine Landreau

Domaine Landreau is a small, family-run Cognac producer located in the heart of Grande Champagne, the premier cru of Cognac. Here, the focus is on authenticity and quality, not flashy packaging or mass production. They use the classic, understated cognaçaise bottle and let the Cognac speak for itself. All their blends are crafted with care, in close collaboration with a local oenologist, to ensure each spirit reflects the character of their land and their personalities.

We had a fantastic visit to Domaine Landreau, where we also discovered their Réserve d'Émile Cognac. An extraordinary Cognac, kept in a single cask by the Landreau family for over a century. This "brut de fût" (cask-strength) Cognac was crafted from a rare blend of Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grapes and aged for 100 years in French oak. It delivers a rich, elegant aromatic palette with astonishing freshness despite its age — a collector's treasure.

History

The story of Domaine Landreau goes back over 170 years. It began in 1852, when Pierre Landreau, originally a miller, bought his first vineyard in Criteuil. Over the generations, the family grew their estate, faced challenges like the phylloxera crisis, and adapted to changing times.

Pierre’s son took over in the 1870s and built the family home that still stands today. He also bought their first still, marking the start of their distillation history. Later, in the early 20th century, Emile brought new energy to the estate—adding a second still and introducing tractors while still using horses and oxen in the vines. This alambic is indeed still in use today. It has been modernized over the years, and was computerized by Thomas in the 2000s.

Paul, Emile’s son, left school at 17 years of age to work full-time on the estate. He expanded operations and added a third, larger still. In 1969, Daniel joined the family business with a fresh agricultural education. He officially took the lead in 1981, during a difficult time for Cognac producers. He responded by opening the estate to visitors and promoting their Cognac across France, keeping the domaine alive and thriving.

Thomas, Daniel’s son, took over in 2012. He modernized the estate, introducing new tools and digital systems while preserving the core values passed down through generations. The domaine now covers 27 hectares, including 25 hectares of Ugni Blanc for Cognac and a small parcel of red grapes for Pineau des Charentes.

Today, the story continues with the next generation already stepping in and making an impact.

People

Domaine Landreau is built on family and teamwork. Thomas has led the domaine since 2012, supported by his parents, Daniel and Françoise, who still play active roles. His partner, Marion, manages the admin side. Thomas’s own son, Noa, entered the business in 2023 after completing his training. Marion’s son,

Mathias, joined in 2024 as an apprentice. In 2024, the team welcomed Faustine as a commercial. Together, they represent a blend of tradition, experience, and fresh energy.

Everyone at Domaine Landereau shares one goal: to keep the family’s passion for Cognac alive and to continue the pursuit of traditional but quality Cognac.

Production: Distillation, Oak & Cognac-making

At Domaine Landreau, Cognac production is deeply rooted in tradition, with just the right amount of modern evolution. Originally, distillation was carried out in a wood-fired still. That method continued until 1982, when they switched to gas — a more controlled and consistent approach they still use today.

Their current alambic has a 20-hectoliter capacity, and it’s used to slowly and carefully distill their eaux-de-vie, ensuring rich, expressive results. The distillate is then aged in French oak barrels, most often with a 350-liter volume with medium toast and medium grain.

Although the Landreau family has been making Cognac for a long period of time, estate bottling is a fairly recent chapter. They revived their own bottlings in 2017, after decades of selling most of their production to major houses like Courvoisier and Rémy Martin. In fact, only about 10% of what they produce is kept for Domaine Landreau’s own range — the rest is sold off. Their goal in the coming years is to increase that share to 30%, preserving more of their best eaux-de-vie to craft and bottle under their own name.

It’s a deliberate, step-by-step process, one that reflects their respect for tradition, for time, and for doing things the right way.

Domaine Landreau (Summary)

At Domaine Landreau, family and time shape every drop of Cognac. Based in Criteuil-la-Magdeleine, deep within the premier cru of Grande Champagne, this estate has remained independent and hands-on since the 19th century. Today, under the leadership of Thomas Landreau, the 6th generation, the domaine marries digital precision with century-old techniques. Their 27-hectare property—mostly Ugni Blanc—thrives on clay-limestone soil and is farmed under HVE Level 3 environmental standards.

The team’s approach is rooted in thoughtful evolution: mechanical harvests and computerized distilling coexist with traditional methods and limited intervention. The result? Cognacs that are expressive, terroir-driven, and unmistakably Landreau.

History of Domaine Landreau

Founded in 1859 by Pierre Landreau, a miller turned vigneron, the domaine has weathered war, vine disease, and market upheaval while steadily expanding and innovating. The phylloxera crisis saw Pierre's son preserve two hectares and invest in distillation, while his grandson Emile brought modern tools—tractors and stills—to the operation during World War II. In the 1980s, Daniel Landreau pioneered direct bottle sales to survive a regional downturn, laying the foundation for the brand’s current identity.

Thomas took the reins in 2012, bringing a fresh perspective while keeping continuity with past generations. His initiatives include automation, a digital distillation system, and a gradual shift toward estate bottling. Today, only 10% of production is bottled under their label, but that figure is growing—with a target of 30% in the years ahead.

Signature Cognacs

Domaine Landreau’s range is proudly rooted in Grande Champagne. From vibrant, fruit-led VSOPs to deeply mature XO, XXO, and the 50-year-aged “Âge d’Or,” each Cognac tells a chapter of the family's story. The century-aged “Réserve d’Émile,” crafted with Folle Blanche and Ugni Blanc and bottled cask-strength, stands as a singular treasure from the early 20th century—undisturbed and vibrant.

In 2025, the estate celebrates its 175th anniversary, marked by a limited-edition anniversary blend that reflects generations of experience and quiet excellence.
