Park Cognac's Bold Rebranding:

Sophisticated, Inviting, Elegant

In the quiet town of Cognac, where the Charente River winds through rolling vineyards and centuries-old distilleries, change is often met with a measured gaze. There is a reason the Charentais snail - always slowly moving forward, never going backwards - is a symbol in the region. But just as treasured eaux-de-vie age gracefully over the years and decades in barrels, so too do our beloved Cognac houses evolve and move forward.

Park Cognac, a revered house whose distilling history goes back to 1880 but whose brand stretches back over three decades, unveiled its first major rebranding in 20 years, signaling not just a new chapter for the house but a thoughtful nod to the evolving tastes of a global audience.

We sat down with Amélie Bruyer from Park Cognac to discuss the motivations and core ideas behind this ambitious transformation.

Embracing change without losing soul

Some say that rebranding is like distilling: you have to preserve the heart while refining the spirit. The impetus for change at Park Cognac stemmed from introspective reflection and market research. Park recognized the need to modernize its image to stand out in an increasingly competitive market. Yet, the challenge was clear: How to evolve without alienating the loyal customers who cherished the brand's heritage? And how to evolve while keeping the same soul, the same spirit, of Park Cognac?

Amélie about this topic:

Our customers are very close. We wanted to invite them on this journey, not leave them behind.

To navigate this delicate balance, Park Cognac adopted a strategic approach:

  1. Internal Vision Crafting: The team, led by Jérôme Tessendier, alongside the entire Park team, meticulously planned the rebranding direction, ensuring every decision resonated with the brand's DNA - and it’s a DNA that can be described as sophisticated and inviting, evoking a sense of purity and understated elegance.
  2. Selective Client Collaboration: They sought input from key clients but kept external consultations limited to maintain a clear and focused vision.

Amélie explained:

We trusted our instincts but also valued the insights of those who know our brand.

The art of the bottle - sustainability meets elegance

A significant facet of the rebranding was the redesign of Park Cognac's bottles—a marriage of sustainability and aesthetics. The new bottle is indeed from a custom mold, only to be seen and felt with these Park Cognacs.

The new bottles feature:

  • Lightweight, Ergonomic Design: Especially for the VS cognac, tailored for mixologists and bartenders. They wanted a bottle that feels as good in the hand as our cognac tastes on the palate. The VS features a lighter, more eco-friendly bottle. From the VSOP and above, the bottle silhouette remains the same but with the more typical heft and feel.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials: Incorporating recycled plastic into aluminum capsules and using bio-sourced materials for closures and packaging.

Redefining the product range - a Cognac for every palate

The rebranding also restructured Park Cognac's offerings into four categories:

1. Blends

This includes the VS, VSOP, and a brand new Nectar Doré XO Cognac.

  • Nectar Doré XO: 10-25 years old. Previously a 100% Grande Champagne Cognac, it's now a blend, featuring eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne (majority), Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois. "This allows for consistent quality and an elegant carafe presentation," Amélie explained.
  • Accessibility: By addressing the rising costs of Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, the XO becomes more accessible without compromising quality. And, they’ve been able to present this stellar XO in a beautiful decanter and still maintain an incredibly attractive retail price.

Without any hesitation, this is the Cognac from the brand refresh we are most excited about. It is a textbook XO Cognac showing a beautiful alliance of fruit, spice, and oak structure. It’s such a perfect addition to the range and will light up many of our tasting sessions to come.

2. Organic

This includes the VSOP Organic Cognac, which now is from the Petite Champagne cru. The previous batch was from the Fins Bois. It really is an expression of purity.

3. Single Cru

Highlighting a deep commitment to terroir:

  • Borderies XO: Crafted predominantly from their own vineyards. Importantly, this bottle now prominently features the XO designation on the label. Beautifully round and soft Borderies Cognac.
  • XO Cigar Blend Fine Champagne: 25-35 years old. Now bottled at 43% alcohol content. "It's robust, designed to stand up to the bold flavors of a fine cigar," she noted.
  • Extra Grande Champagne: This updated decanter will only become available from 2025, but the Cognac remains exactly the same: 30-40 year old Grande Champagne from Park’s most treasured collection of eaux-de-vie.

4. Mizunara

This range remains more or less unchanged.

What is Mizunara Wood?
Mizunara, or Quercus mongolica, is a species of oak native to Japan. The name "Mizunara" combines "mizu" (water) and "nara" (oak), reflecting the wood's high moisture content and porous nature. The trees can take up to 200 years to mature and can be challenging to work with, which makes the barrels quite rare.

Why Mizunara is Captivating Connoisseurs

  • Unique Flavor Profile: Mizunara imparts notes of sandalwood, coconut, and exotic spices. "It adds a layer of complexity and mystique.
  • Cultural Fusion: By finishing cognac in Mizunara barrels, Park Cognac creates a dialogue between French tradition and Japanese craftsmanship.
  • Appealing to Whisky Enthusiasts: The Mizunara Oak Finish targets whisky drinkers who appreciate age statements and unique cask finishes. An invitation to explore Cognac in a new light.

Available in 5-year and 12-year expressions, these Cognacs align with age statements familiar to whisky aficionados.

Democratizing XO - luxury within reach

The three XOs in the range have surprisingly less overlap between them, something which was less well defined when there was only the XO Grande Champagne and the XO Cigar Blend. Now the Nectar Doré XO stands out as a benchmark XO: complex, balanced, round, and seriously satisfying. The XO Borderies showcases all we love about the Borderies: soft textures and nice natural sweetness. And the XO Cigar Blend Fine Champagne increases the richness, spice, and intensity.

They are three distinctly different Cognacs, with different aroma and flavor profiles and mouthfeels. They all cater to newcomers and experienced drinkers alike. That is truly what we find remarkable about this range of three XOs. And it deserves to be said that Park Cognac is clearly making an strong effort to make the XO category approachable:

  • XO in Carafe: Priced under €100. "Luxury shouldn't be unattainable," Amélie smiled.
  • Borderies XO: Around €70. An invitation to the Borderies cru from Park’s own vineyard production.
  • XO Cigar Blend: At €135-140. "For the connoisseur seeking depth, spice, and intensity."

Unveiling the Distillerie Tessendier connection

Perhaps the most symbolic change is the prominent inclusion of "Distillerie Tessendier" on every bottle. Indeed, Park is the producer’s brand of Cognac, and Distillerie Tessendier is the winery and distilling operation. Park has a healthy amount of vines in the Fins Bois and Borderies cru, and their own eaux-de-vie are represented throughout the range of Park Cognac.

Amélie reflected:

For years, we kept the distillery and brand identities separate. But it's time to proudly share the family's winemaking and distilling legacy.

The link now between Park Cognac and Distillerie Tessendier is made more clear. The bottle custom mold features a texture embossing of Distillerie Tessendier across the bottom of the bottle. And there are design elements on the bottle and capsules that show details from the copper stills and wave-like patterns echoing the Charente River.

Sophisticated warmth - the essence of Park Cognac

The rebranding culminates in a philosophy Amélie describes as "sophisticated and warm." These aren't just words; they're feelings the house wants to evoke when someone sees, tastes, and experiences a Park Cognac.

Park Cognac's brand refresh is more than a visual makeover; it's a reaffirmation of values and a strategic step into the future. They strive to honor their past but aren't bound by it. And as lovers of fine Cognac, Park is making a strong statement with their updated range.

The new Cognac range

History of Park Cognac

Park is produced by a family owned company that can be traced back to the year 1880. It was then that one Gaston Tessendier, a teacher of mathematics, became the proud owner of a vineyard in Cognac. Rather than entrust the tending of the vines to others, he looked after them himself, working this around his regular teaching commitments. This proved so successful that Gaston began to expand his vines, eventually creating a distillery to produce the first Tessendier wines and cognacs.

Tessendier went on to provide eaux-de-vie to many of the cognac houses in the region, soon becoming known for the quality of its produce and quickly developing into one of the largest bulk suppliers in the whole region. The business continued to remain in the hands of the Tessendier family, and this is still holds true to this day.

Park Cognac Today

Today the company Tessendier & Fils is in the capable hands of two brothers, Jerome and Lilian Tessendier, the fourth generation since its creator. In 2005, Jerome decided it was time for Tessendier to not only provide cognacs to other suppliers, but also to produce, bottle and sell themselves. Thus, a range of six brands was created, of which Park Cognac was one. All the cognacs are produced from grapes that are free from chemicals and pesticides, and the range of Park Cognac is surprisingly large, incorporating six different qualities from a VS up to an XO and a Grande Champagne blend.

The rationale behind all the Park Cognacs is to make light, straightforward and completely unadulterated eaux-de-vie, all elegantly presented in the traditional shape glass cognac bottles.

The cognacs are both light and delicate, and are currently marketed in various countries in Europe, including Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, Germany, Italy and Holland.  As an addition, and thanks to the incredible marketing force of Tessendier USA, the brand is also available to purchase in the U.S.

News, Products and Prices

Using grapes from all regions of Cognac, the brand produces a surprisingly wide range of eaux-de-vie. The idea of Park Cognac is to create cognacs that are affordable to all, and to this end they not only produce their wares in bottles of the usual 70cl size, but also in smaller bottles of 20cl.

In 2024, Park Cognac unveiled its first major rebranding in 20 years, signaling not just a new chapter for the house but a thoughtful nod to the evolving tastes of a global audience.
