Tasting review

Tasting notes by Taylor

Eye: The Marcillac 1995 pours an amber color with shimmers of copper. As the glass bowl is coated with the Armagnac for the first time, one will notice crawling legs reluctantly moving down the glass, hinting at a certain richness and body.

Nose: The nose immediately confirms the sensation of richness picked up from eyeing the Armagnac. This will most likely be an Armagnac to chew on. Front and center is a lovely vanilla extract aroma. Just behind the vanilla notes are caramelized apples and pears; apple cinnamon applesauce comes to mind. Soft baking spices are lurking, but this does not seem to be an overtly spicy Armagnac. It really is a fantastic nose. It’s fresh, fruit-driven, and youthful, while simultaneously showing the signs of maturity and the delicate oakiness often found in mature Cognacs and Armagnacs.

Palate: In the mouth initially there are no surprises. The clean pleasant vanilla from the nose shows up in the mouth. There is some oak spice, but it is measured and in balance. As far as the fruit: applesauce, caramelized pear, and toffee apples. Yes indeed, the Armagnac is chewy and has a wonderful texture. The flavors are integrated in the sense that no one flavor sticks out, or is heavy handed. The time spent in the barrel has allowed the flavors to melt and marry. Despite the chewy texture, there is not an ounce of sweetness in the mouthfeel. This is due to somewhat grainy tannins and tingly rustic finish that cause the cheeks to contract under the teeth. Grainy or rustic should not be taken with a negative connotation. Here they add character and provide a touch of firmness to the finish that contrasts the heavier layered texture - heavier layered texture compared to Cognac, that is. The 1995 delivers in its aromas, flavors, and sensations. It’s clearly an Armagnac, but it’s not too far of a departure from the Cognacs we all hold dear to our hearts. This is a fantastic gateway into the world of Armagnac.

Description

Armagnac Marcillac Vintage Collection 1995

Harvested in 1995, the grapes used for the Armagnac Marcillac 1995 were pressed and left to ferment naturally. While it was distilled the following winter, note that the vintage of an Armagnac corresponds exclusively to the year of harvest. On leaving the alembic still, the eau-de-vie is transparent, with an alcohol percentage between 52% and 60%. This spirit is powerful and aromatic, but softened over time in oak casks, where it also gains an extraordinary rich hue. This particular release has been matured for several decades in Gascon oak, with only 500 bottles produced at an ABV of 42%.

Located in the Lot-et-Garonne region near the city of Agen, the Marcillac Armagnac estate dates back to the 12th Century when it was founded by Prémonté monks. The monastery was acquired in 1730 by a wine merchant from Bordeaux who restored it and converted it into a castle, which was fashionable at the time, and focused on developing the vineyard and wines. The current family acquired the estate in the year 1900 and started distilling wine to make Armagnac following the exact same vinification, distillation and aging processes that the monks followed centuries before.

The sandy, gravel-rich soil of Lot-et-Garonne is similar to that of Bas Armagnac, producing Ugni Blanc grapes that result in powerful Armagnacs which are superior for aging. The old chapel at the castle, made with thick stone walls, provides the perfect location to age eaux-de-vie for extended time periods. Combining the wonders of a superb region with the perfect conditions for aging, you simply can’t fail to get a great result. Today, the production at Marcillac is run by Robert, fourth-generation winemaker on the estate. Although he has brought some innovation and modernity to the company, he still strictly makes his Armagnac using traditional methods.

Presentation of the Bottle

Shown in the ‘basquaise’ bottle style characteristic of this producer, the Marcillac 1995 has been traditionally hand-sealed with rose gold wax. The rose gold color is also used for the lettering printed on the bottle, creating a subtle contrast against the deep color of the liquid contained within. Each bottle has been individually numbered by hand.

How to Enjoy Armagnac Marcillac 1995

We recommend serving this elegant vintage Armagnac with a cheeseboard or fruit-based desserts. Serve in tulip glasses, and allow the spirit to rest for up to a minute to let the aromas concentrate, expressing the full flavors of this single harvest.

About Armagnac Marcillac

With its sandy, gravel-rich soils, Lot-et-Garonne is similar to that of Bas Armagnac, producing Ugni Blanc grapes that result in powerful Armagnacs which are superior for aging. Meanwhile, the chateau, made with thick stone walls, provides the perfect location to age eaux-de-vie for extended time periods. These conditions allow Maison Armagnac Marcillac to produce well-aged vintage products of premium quality and tasting characteristics. Combining the wonders of a superb region with the perfect conditions for aging, a spectacular result is always granted. Run by Robert, a fourth-generation winemaker on the estate, today the brand brings forward both innovation and modernity to the company, while still remaining true to the traditional methods of Armagnac production through years of dedication and craftsmanship.
